THE TEAM

Dr Sarah Gowling
I am a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist with over 10 years’ experience working across a range of NHS settings alongside supporting The National Psychology Clinic.
I gained my undergraduate Psychology degree at the University of Surrey and following this trained in Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at University College London. I subsequently completed a professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Universities of Coventry and Warwick.
I have been privileged to work with a diverse range of individuals, seeking support for a range of issues. I have worked in several NHS settings, including primary and secondary care, Adult Mental Health Services, Child and Adolescent Teams, and services for people with a learning disability and autism.
Alongside clinical work, I offer regular supervision and reflective practice groups to qualified and unqualified professionals, and trainees. I also provide consultation, deliver training and teaching to NHS colleagues, external organisations, and on Clinical Psychology Doctorate programmes, and have published research in academic journals.
Compassion is central to my approach: I prioritise helping people to feel safe within the therapeutic relationship, while working with a broad range of difficulties including anxiety, low self-esteem, low mood and depression, trauma or post-traumatic stress (as a result of difficult life events, abuse or domestic violence), grief, bereavement and relational difficulties.
I describe my approach as ‘integrative’ which means I use skills from several evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including Systemic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Compassion Focussed Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and tailor the approach to an individual’s therapy goals and preferences.

What our patients say
You have both been incredibly kind and nothing has ever seemed too much trouble. The information, guidance and signposting to more sources of support will be invaluable.
It was a real pleasure to talk to people who really understood the complexity and subtlety of my son’s autism...it was great to see how you got beneath the surface to get the real story from him. You were kind, empathetic, encouraging and generous.
Very pleased that we were able to take advantage of their skills to assist [our son] in getting the diagnosis and help that he needs.
This was the best interaction I’ve ever had with professionals, they were super supportive and consistently made sure I was comfortable, and really took the time to understand me and my needs.
